February 11

February 11, 2015

Everyone
·         More fog right before curtains open.
·         All eyes look at the exit sign (above the audience)
·         Needed more energy at the beginning. Walk in with purpose – the people walking in. Know whereyou’ve been and where you are going.
·         Study the script for when you are supposed to react and how you are to react. If you don’t have a script, ask for another.
·         UMBRELLAS IN FUNERAL SCENE. Once you get to your spot, freeze.  Those saying lines move, say line, freeze. Unfreeze on cue.
·         Hats off in the inside of places.
·         Typewriter wasn’t consistently playing during cues. Singing “Shall We Gather at the River” needs to be faster.
·         Dolph – “honest man – go toward Willie – if you are close enough to touch him, do it, then freeze ONE BEAT after man.  Stay frozen during Jack’s speech- “governor” unfreeze, laugh and Happy Days music.
·         Hats off in house.
·         During bad speech – listen to the speech and react negatively.
·         Have a macmurphee sign in the 2nd speech .
·         Louisiana is HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Like being in a sauna.
·         Decide how, when and what you are going to do as far as costumes.
·         Picnic wasn’t vocal.  In the second speech, people did not react.
·         Transition after second speech did not work.
·         Crowd needs to be the transition between the Jack, Adam, and Anne scene to the job of a lifetime scene.
·         After the “Damn you “ line by Sadie – strikers verbally make noise as Willie exits.
·         The scene with the hospital speech – we need signs supporting Willie.  You are following him.  You are crazy about him.  WE NEED NOISE.
·         During his speech after I’ll BREAK HIM – start singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.  He will shout – It is your right!....You shall not be deprived of hope.  Song keeps until Anne runs up to Willie – Adam is in scene watching.  Jack has been looking at exit sign. They freeze and Anne walks down to the next scene with Jack.   After Jack clears his throat, they exit and lights are focused DSC for Jack and Anne to complete the scene.
·         Rework ending – need more slow motion. Paige did a great job with this.
Jack
·         Cut – and the drowsy spider feels the tingle and is drowsy no more.
·         Cut bearded black
·         Be funny when you are speaking about everything Lucy doesn’t like.
·         Walk right to rednecks – don’t walk around. When you leave the rednecks act like you are ready to leave – hold your hands out.
·         Walk right to Willie and Lucy’s house.
·         Cut …I haven’t seen Willie Stark in four years. Personally I don’t care who is governor of this state.
·         Say – In an instant, I lost both my fathers, Ellis Burden and Judge Irwin.  I dug up….
·         At the end, say- In my new picture….I heard him and I believed him.  Skip first part.
Adam, Anne, Jack
·         Still not seeing the relationship.
Anne and Jack
·         Go from Jack, I’ve seen your father on the street and he didn’t look well. I didn’t even recognize him at first (CUT derelicts line, Jack)
·         The lines in your second meeting – when Anne takes the sheet off the bench, this must be meaningful and wasn’t.
Hugh
·         When moving bench and sheet – lay sheet over the bench – draping over it with leaves on top.
Mother and Lily
·         Distracting behind Willie, Lucy, Jack’s scene.
Mother
Remember the clinic.
Mom and Jack
Scene is not believable.
Willie
Remember voices
You were a little late getting to the house before Jack arrived.
Editor
Stand straighter, puff out chest.
You have to be the strong one.
You go see – is an order.
Lucy & Willie
Have to see relationship. Lucy, you are sweeping, , see Willie, take apron off, kiss his cheek, smell flowers and smile,  go outside curtain line to take flowers out,
Turn the bar around and take all your stuff out.
Willie, Jack, and Lucy scene
It died.  Energy level did not stay until the end of the scene
DIrectors
Nothing in back in memory scenes. If there are things in back, make it opposite acting focus.
During Willie, Lucy, Jack’s scenes – no one in back.
Willie and Jack scene – no one in back.
Jack and Editor’s final scene together – people in back were good.
No people in back in Adam, Jack, and Anne’s scene.
We could cut Mom and Jack scene if we still need more time.
People are good in the back after the “damn you “ line in Willie’s office.
No people behind Anne and Jack’s scenes.
Six million scene – no one in the back.
Adam in Willie’s office – too much upstage.
No one upstage with Lily and Jack.
Judge and Jack scene – no one.
MUSIC
Thunder in funeral scene.
I'll change music for tomorrow - instrumentals instead of singing lyrics for your part.
Rednecks
Remember what you did Wednesday. Rearrange blocking – seemed too staged.
Sheriff
Cheat front more – loved you.
Jack, Sadie, Willie
You’ve been framed – breathing vocals
Loved the grab and kiss – turn her the other direction.
As Jack gives advice to Willie, he needs to get excited, and Willie needs to be REALLY listening.  He takes the advice to heart and changes in the next speech.
Tiny
React to Willie tearing up the speech
LOWER VOICE – finger things.
Sadie
We missed your monologue
Keep up with typing
Cut But this time without the help of the party machine.
Sadie and Willie
Kiss and leave together – in love instead of staying on top of the desk.
Willie
Cut – your crop……market?
Cut –and feed, slop and milk before breakfast
Cut – he studied nights after a hard day’s work in the fields.
Cut – but it started his thinking.  Next time would be different.
Cut – Did I guess this?  I did not, for I heard their sweet talk.
Sadie, Tiny, Sugar Boy, Willie, Jack
Lucy’s leaving me – react vocally
Byram White resigned – react vocally
6 million – REACT to the money – React to the name of the hospital.
Step on lines.
Sadie and Jack
Remember clinic critique.
If you were a man - remember
Adam and Jack
I sent you texts about things you can do to make it seem you are comfortable with each other.
Sadie, Tiny, Sugar Boy, Willie, Jack, Adam
REACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Is this a threat?  Every line in this scene could be explosive. I’ll take the job – react.
Your reasons are your own – good.
Judge and Jack
Remember critique.
Mom, Judge, Jack
Mom stay

  1. There are a lot of things to work on hut the biggest has to be cutting time. We have to step on lines and clear up the transitions to do so.

  2. the clinic was very helpful and I can't wait for us to put all the great advice to use!

  3. This is woody. I think we need to figure out the sound, music, and singing cues so we know for sure that we're supposed to b/c its often dead silent and breaking that is hard

  4. Yesterday it reay dragged and there were hardly any reactions from anyone. Also make sure that if we are going to do the scenes in the back that you need to be in the right spot!

  5. Transitions need to be worked on. We really don't know what scene comes after the scene we are currently in. I also think that one thing that will help speed up the show is if during the speeches the crowd makes noises but Willie continues to speak. To me, his speeches seem rather choppy because we interrupt him every few lines.

  6. Right now we have a lot of scenes that are trying to tell one story but they don't flow. We have to make the scenes flow as one not act like we have 20 different scenes that have similar people. This will cut time and present the story line more clearly.

  7. We need to start working on changing costumes now that we have them. This will help us keep the order of the scenes. Also, the time will be more accurate. However, we are over 40 minutes so much that either a scene needs to be cut or lines be cut.

  8. Sorry for mentioning this again but don't stand in front of the light near the home. I know it's hard but find a way where you are OUT of the way
